The genus Godetia includes 20 species of herbaceous annual plants that are grown as decorative flowering crops. Single, but more often collected in inflorescences, flowers bloom in summer. Only hybrids of a wide range of colors are cultivated. Godetia charming (Godetia amoena) is an erect shrub 30-60 cm high with lanceolate leaves and funnel-shaped flowers, simple or double white, pink, salmon, red, raspberry flowers. G. dasycarpa is a 20 cm tall species with green-blue leaves and mallow flowers. Godetia grandiflora is a strongly branching profusely flowering species with a height of 30-40 cm, with oblong pointed leaves and large, diverse flowers. Especially beautiful varieties with double pink-purple, like azalea, flowers. From crossing Godetia deleterata and Godetia dasycarpa, many forms and varieties of plants of various heights (25-70 cm) were obtained, with double and simple flowers of bright pink, salmon-pink color or two-colored and three-colored (pink-orange-white).

Cultivation

Godetia are grown in the open ground in flower beds, lawns, borders, mixborders and as flowers for cutting. They can also be cultivated in pots on balconies, verandas and terraces. Planted in spring, in a loose moistened, not very fertile land to avoid too lush growth. When planting, it is important not to overfeed the plants with mineral nitrogen fertilizers, 20 g/m2 is enough complex fertilizer with low nitrogen content. When growing in pots, a substrate is used - a mixture of turf, peat and sand (1:1:1), 10-20 g of complete mineral fertilizer is applied to a bucket of soil. In summer, the plant is fed once a month.

Location

Godetia can be grown both in the open sun and in partial shade.

Temperature

Godetia is a relatively cold-resistant plant, not particularly sensitive to high air temperature.

Watering

In spring and summer, it is watered abundantly to keep the soil moist. It doesn't tolerate waterlogging.

Reproduction

Sowing seeds in the ground is propagated in April, after 2-3 weeks shoots appear. They are thinned out, leaving a distance between plants of 20-30 cm. Blooms godetia 2-2. 5 months after sowing, blooms long, profusely. They are put in pots one at a time. They can also be sown in late summer in a sheltered area of the garden, and in spring they can be transplanted into the ground or into pots.

Diseases

Godetia is affected by peronosporosis and rust, diseases caused by fungi that cause spots on leaves and stems. They are disposed of with appropriate fungicides. Root rot is caused by other fungi or unsuitable growing conditions: the soil is too wet and cold. Viral diseases can cause yellowing and dwarfism. Destroy the affected plants.

Acquisition

Seeds can be found in well-stocked retail outlets. Check their freshness, because then germination is guaranteed. It is more difficult to get seedlings in containers. Choose one that is compact and well-formed, without signs of rot.
