The sort Vriesea unites about 200 types. Some of them grow up as houseplants for two reasons: because of beauty of striped leaves and also long bright inflorescences which are usually formed in the summer. Plants blossom repeatedly if to process them special phytohormones. The leaves forming the socket, long, rigid, lanceolate, with smooth edges of more or less intensive green coloring, are often covered with dark or brown strips. From the center of the socket there is a spike-shaped inflorescence, simple or branched of red, the orange or yellow steady bracts from where the small tubular white or yellow, not for long keeping florets look out. The vriesia splendens brilliant (Vriesea splendens) - has the most widespread epiphytic species narrow leaves, dark green in a brown strip; from the center of the funnel-shaped socket the inflorescence appears (under natural conditions - in the summer; but can blossom all the year- round if to create suitable conditions) with bright red bracts from which yellow flowers develop. At Polman's vriesia splendens (V. x poelmanii) the socket - from bright green leaves and the bright red inflorescence which is branched out at the basis. At a vriesia splendens zamorensis (V. zamorensis) long glossy dark green leaves and a bright red inflorescence. From a set of hybrids are most popular: Christiaan, Elan, Favoryet, 'Fire' and, at last, Tiffany and Charlotte.

Cultivation

Vriesias splendens, as a rule, are quite simple in cultivation. They are kept in pots on one or in composition with other pineappele family indoors, less often - exposed on open air. After blossoming the sheet socket dies off, but new main escapes which develop quickly enough (2-3 years) are very quickly formed. At the age of 2-3 years, it is possible to try to accelerate blossoming, having put the mature apple emitting the ethylene stimulating formation of flowers near a plant. Time in 2 weeks for watering add liquid fertilizer in number of 5 g on a bucket to water.

Location

The favorite place is a penumbra, but a plant it is possible to have also in well-lit place if only it didn't get under direct sunshine.

Temperature

Optimum temperature - 20-22 °C, but aren't admissible decrease to 13 °C in the winter and increase to 28 °C the Meeting.

Watering

In the spring-summer the vriesia splendens should be watered plentifully, but in the fall-winter it is enough to support soil in slightly damp state. Use warm not carbonate water, it is optimum - rain. Very important during the periods when the plant doesn't blossom, except wetting of the soil to pour water in the center of the socket (about 2 cm). This plant loves high humidity of air of the environment which is maintained by frequent spraying by water.

Transplant

When roots fill all space, which is available at their order, replace plants in the spring in a new pot, using a container of slightly bigger size, than previous. Soil on the basis of peat has to be fertile, friable and very well trained.

Care

Dust from leaves is removed with a damp rag, avoid use of lustrating solution. After the plant fades, it is cut off at the basis.

Reproduction

Vriesias splendens can be made multiple copies seeds, but about 10 years will be required before they blossom. The majority of types of vriesias splendens form with age children who can be separated from a maternal plant when these children enough develop (approximately up to 15 cm). Further they are replaced on one in a new pot with very well trained, without lime soil on the basis of peat and sand. Maintain the increased humidity, trying not to be overzealous, however, otherwise there can be a decay, the same treats also temperature (24-27 °C). For maintenance of such conditions, it is necessary to make "small greenery" of a transparent plastic bag. The place has to be lit, but not under direct sunshine. After rooting of shoots with them handle as adult plants.

Diseases

Vriesias splendens aren't really sensitive to diseases and wreckers. Problems can arise in case of mistakes when leaving: rotting and spottiness at excess or insufficient watering; a burn of leaves if the plant is located under direct sunshine. Get rid of mealy scales processing by the cotton tampon moistened in alcohol, and then spray a plant with special anticoccidin medicine. Yellow specks which gradually merge appear from behind pincers on leaves, covering all sheet plate, and decolour it. Plants in this case process special medicines (acaricides) maintain the increased humidity of air.

Acquisition

Healthy (in particular, the attention is paid first of all to a root neck), well-formed plants, with only the inflorescence beginning to look out of the sheet socket - his coloring has to be only slightly noticeable.
