The most common and popular in the culture of Adonis vernalis is a perennial medicinal and ornamental plant with a height of 15-30 cm with simple yellow flowers up to 7 cm in diameter, blooming in spring in April-May. The aboveground part of spring adonis contains cardiac glycosides. Its leaves are pinnately dissected. There are also white-flowered varieties. The genus Adonis includes about 20 herbaceous annual or perennial rhizomatous plants. They have leaves dissected into narrow segments, single large regular flowers, yellow or red. Usually, some perennials are grown that are very resistant to cold, and often to drought. The most interesting views from a decorative point of view are presented below. Adonis Amur (A. amurensis ) is a plant 20-40 cm high with golden-yellow single flowers (double in the variety 'Terry') with a diameter of 4-5 cm, blooms in April-May. Like spring gori-color, Amur adonis is particularly suitable for rock gardens and mountain gardens. Annual summer adonis (A. alstivalis) is 15-50 cm tall with pinnate leaves and red flowers that bloom from June to August. Adonis pyrenaicus (A. pyrenaicus) is a species 30-40 cm tall with erect peduncles and trifoliate leaves; golden-yellow flowers bloom in spring and summer. Annual stable species Adonis autumnalis (A. autumnalis ) is a plant 35-40 cm tall with erect branched peduncles and trifoliate leaves. The flowers are red with a black base, blooming in summer.

Cultivation

Adonis are grown outdoors in gardens and parks among trees and shrubs, in rock gardens and mountain gardens, in borders. They prefer well-drained, sufficiently moistened soil; mineral fertilizers are applied during soil preparation. Plants are planted in the final planting site in summer or autumn, and the distance between the plants should be 30 cm.

Location

Although adonis prefer a sunny place, it is still better to place them in partial shade.

Temperature

They are resistant to both high and low air temperatures. They tolerate winter frosts well. Even if the aboveground part dies, new shoots grow from the base.

Watering

All these species can withstand a short-term drought. When it is particularly hot and dry, it is recommended to water them abundantly. During the period of active growth and development, plants are watered regularly in moderation.

Care

It is enough to remove the dry parts when dividing the bushes in early spring or autumn.

Reproduction

Propagate by dividing rhizomes and seeds. Division of rhizomes is carried out in early spring or autumn, immediately transplanting the resulting parts into the ground. Seeds are sown in the open ground in spring or autumn. Seeds usually germinate slowly, such specimens bloom only in the 4th year.

Diseases

Various fungi can cause root rot if the soil is too compacted and water stagnates in it. In this case, watering is temporarily stopped or care is taken in advance to ensure that the soil is of a suitable quality.

Acquisition

Adonis seedlings are easily found in nurseries and gardening centers. It is recommended to buy it in the spring, and not grow it yourself from seed, because germination is very slow. Make sure that the seedlings have a healthy root system.
