The genus includes 80 species of perennial herbaceous plants, but the most widespread is the perennial daisy (Bellis perennis), which is grown as a biennial. The low plant forms a rosette of spatulate leaves; the shoots are branched, shortened, at their ends - peduncles with baskets of yellow tubular flowers in the center and white or pinkish lingual (so-called petals). The flowering period is extended-it starts early in spring and ends in autumn. However, daisies can be "forced" to bloom even in winter. Groups and varieties are divided according to the diameter, double inflorescences, the shape of the corolla of lingual marginal flowers. Today, double varieties with white, pink, red, and carmine varieties are more often grown and other shades of the red palette with flowers. The flowers of the round-leaved daisy (B. rotundifolia) are white with a sky-blue tint. The forest daisy (B. sylvestris) has red tongue flowers.

Cultivation

Undemanding to the soil plant. It blows out in the damp earth in winter. Seedlings are obtained from seed, then planted in cups or in cellular containers, and in the spring - in flower beds and lawns. When planting seedlings, observe the distance between plants 15-20 cm. They are used in flower beds, in flowering lawns, in borders, as well as in pots - on balconies and terraces. It is possible to stimulate vegetation and flowering in winter, if you keep them indoors at a temperature of 8-10 °C.

Location

Daisies should be grown in the open sun or with little shade.

Temperature

It is a hardy plant that tolerates relatively low temperatures.

Watering

It is necessary in dry and hot weather, and they are also watered on windy days, but moderately. Potting culture assumes that the soil must always be in a slightly moist state.

Transplant

When growing a plant in a pot, it is transplanted in the spring to a new one, slightly larger than the previous one (8-10 cm in diameter).

Reproduction

Propagate by seeds, cuttings and dividing the bush. To propagate daisies that do not form seeds, they resort to dividing the bush. Sowing is usually carried out in the summer. The seedlings that appear are transplanted into cups with peaty soil, which is watered until the spill, adding a full mineral fertilizer to the water at the rate of 20-30 g per bucket. Cups are placed in a protected place so that in early spring they can have flowering seedlings at their disposal, which can be planted in a flower bed.

Diseases

Daisies rarely get sick or are affected by pests. But there may be spots on the leaves due to Septoria bellidis (Septoria bellidis) or genus Cercospora. Root rot is usually caused by Pithium matophorum or Texas root rot caused by the fungus Phymatotrichum omnivorum. All these diseases are eliminated with the help of appropriate fungicides.

Acquisition

Daisies are bought in flower nurseries, gardening centers and flower shops - in cups or cellular containers-from where they are immediately planted on the site. When buying, make sure that the seedlings are well developed and have excellent storage conditions.
