The Nemesia genus contains over 50 herbaceous and semi-shrubby annual and perennial plants. Here we will only talk about annual ground herbaceous species that are used in borders and grown as potted crops; they are also suitable as flowers for cutting (in small bouquets). Cultivated mainly hybrids with a wide range of color of flowers. Most of them are derived from nemesia goiter. Multi-flowered Nemesia (Nemesia floribunda) is a common species that grows to a height of 40 cm. Leaves are opposite, basal - oval, with a toothed edge, and stem - whole-edged. Covered with purple specks and veins, milky-white flowers are collected in a brush. From nemesia bushy (N. fruticans) obtained many varieties with flowers of different colors: purple, blue, white, yellow, pink. They are mainly used for flower beds, hanging baskets, as a pot culture. Flowers of Nemesia lilac (N. lilacina) are lilac, with a light spur and lip, colored yellow below. The leaves are lanceolate and toothed. Nemesia menziesii is rarely grown, but several varieties and hybrids with bright orange flowers have been obtained from this species, among which the 'Orange King' is widely known, growing up to 40-60 cm in height, with lanceolate toothed leaves. Nemesia goiter (N. strumosa) is a root-spreading species, a densely branching shrub 30-40 cm high. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, with a serrated edge. In early summer, tubular flowers with spurs, collected in apical brushes, bloom. The color is different, with a predominance of white, yellow, red and purple. Bred garden forms are usually shorter and painted in other colors, such as bright orange, bright red, and blue. Mixes of bright colors, such as 'Carnival mixed', are in the greatest demand. The even blue color of the flowers is distinguished by the variety 'Blue Gemstone'. More large flowers differ varieties of nemesia hybrid (N. hybrida hort.).

Cultivation

Nemesia is grown in the open ground in flower beds, in borders or in pots on balconies and terraces. When growing in the open ground, plants are planted in the ground in the spring from April to June, leaving a distance of 10-15 cm between them. Any cultivated soil with a slightly acidic reaction (pH 5.5), drained, and with a high humus content is suitable. For potted, as a rule, low-growing varieties, a ground soil consisting of 2/3 of peat and 1/3 of fertile land is used, to which a complex mineral fertilizer of 15 g per bucket of soil is added.

Location

Nemesia is light-loving and grows well in open, sunny places.

Temperature

Nemesia is resistant to high air temperature, usually blooms until frost.

Watering

Very frequent, especially in summer.

Reproduction

Propagate by seeds that are sown in the ground of a greenhouse or greenhouse in spring, in April. Use a peat substrate with the addition of sand to improve drainage. Seeds are covered with a layer of loose soil. Seedling dive and are planted in the fresh air at the end of frost.

Diseases

The spider mite is most often annoying: it bites through the leaves and sucks the juice out of them, which leads to drying out. They get rid of the tick by treating it with acaricides and maintaining high humidity in the air around them. Nemesias can get cold damage (spots on leaves and stems; rot can easily develop in these areas) if they are planted outside too early.

Acquisition

In gardening centers and nurseries, you can buy seeds and seedlings in containers. Check that the seeds are fresh, their germination rate depends on it. The planting material should be compact, with glossy foliage.
