Cultivation

Plants of the genus Abelia is grown in the open ground in parks and gardens, both in single and small group plantings, and is used to create hedges and shrub mixborders. Shrubs retain their decorative effect even after a long flowering period due to the purple sepals remaining on the pedicel. They are planted in autumn or early spring. There are no special requirements for the soil, as long as it is well drained. They prefer land fertilized with organic substances (4-5 kg /m2). Abelia grandiflora tolerates lime. Pruning is usually not required, only dry, damaged or unsightly branches are removed. Pruning hedges from evergreen species is done at the end of flowering, and from deciduous ones - in February or March.

Location

Abelia is planted both in the open sun and in partial shade, as long as the place is protected from cold winds.

Temperature

These plants tolerate high air temperatures well. Some species, such as Schumann's Abelia, require shelter in winter, although often the lower part of the bushes is still damaged. A large-flowered Abelia is resistant to low temperatures.

Watering

It is necessary only for young plants immediately after planting completely in the ground and during prolonged dry weather.

Reproduction

The most common method is propagation by both green and Mature cuttings. In June, semi-woody cuttings 8-10 cm long are cut from side shoots that did not have flowers and planted in a mixture of peat and sand at a temperature of 16-18 °C. After root formation, the seedlings are moved to cups filled with a suitable substrate. Such plants usually bloom in the 3rd year. In winter, they are kept in a closed, unheated room. It can be planted on a permanent planting site in the spring.

Diseases

Aphids often cause significant damage to young Abelia shrubs. On its sugary secretions covering the leaves, rabble develops. From insect pests get rid of with the help of appropriate drugs.

Acquisition

Plants of the genus Abelia is quite easy to find in gardening centers and specialized nurseries. They are purchased in autumn or early spring, when seedlings can be immediately planted in the ground. Choose plants that are relatively small and easier to plant. Make sure they are healthy when you buy them.
