The genus Armeria includes about 80 species of perennial resistant herbaceous root-spreading plants with thin leaves collected in basal rosettes. The flowers are small, pink or purple, in spherical inflorescences. Armeria Alpina is a species that grows on poor, low-yielding calcareous soils, among grasses, 10-15 cm high. the leaves are linear lanceolate. On bare long peduncles from May to July, inflorescences of red flowers are formed. Armeria sod (A. caespitosa) - a species with peduncles 6-8 cm long; grows in the mountains. It has narrow brown-green leaves, in May-June bright pink flowers bloom, collected in inflorescences. Cultivars have more saturated pink flowers. Growing, the Armeria forms dense pillows. Armeria maritime (A. maritima) is a species found in the wild on rocky places and meadows near the sea coast. This perennial is characterized by many linear or narrow-lanceolate dark green leaves, which are collected in dense basal rosettes. Head-shaped inflorescences are formed from pink, purple or red small flowers; in varieties, the flowers are also white, dark red and different shades of pink. The cultivar is particularly decorative 'Vindictive' with bright lilac flowers. Armeria pseudoarmeria (A. pseudoarmeria) is a very branched species with a height of 60 cm from the base. It has lanceolate flat leaves and white, sometimes pink flowers.

Cultivation

Armeria species are grown in the open ground in flower beds and borders, but the ideal place for planting most species is a rock garden. Armeria maritime is particularly suitable for coastal areas. Plants can also be grown in pots and containers on balconies and terraces. Planting on a permanent planting site is carried out in early spring or autumn, in loose, drained soil, sandy or stony, fertilized with organic substances at the rate of 4-5 kg /m2. Depending on the type and use of Armeria, plants are planted at a distance of 20-30 cm from each other. When growing in pots, a substrate of earth (50%), peat (30%) and sand (20%) is used with the addition of 20-30 g of complex fertilizer per bucket of soil. When growing in pots and on poor soil in spring and summer, once every 20-30 days, a complex mineral fertilizer is added to the water for irrigation in the amount of 10-20 g per bucket.

Location

It prefers a sunny position.

Temperature

A stable plant that easily tolerates fluctuations in air temperature.

Watering

In spring and summer, they are watered regularly without stagnation of water.

Transplant

Produced in spring, if the roots no longer fit in the same container.

Care

Remove wilted flowers and damaged parts, especially when growing in pots.

Reproduction

Propagated by seeds or division of the bushes. Seeds are sown in the open ground in spring or late autumn, before winter. You can sow seeds in a greenhouse in March, and in the fall plant seedlings in a permanent place in the ground. Such plants bloom in the 2nd year. Bushes are divided in the spring, immediately planting the resulting parts completely.

Diseases

On the Armeria, rust may appear in the form of white pustules, which then turn brown. The disease is eliminated with the help of fungicides. When growing on dense and waterlogged ground, it is not uncommon for growth to slow down and the roots to rot. This can be prevented by planting a thrift in a more loose soil.

Acquisition

Seeds are easily found in specialized trade pavilions. In the spring, seedlings are also available in cups and multi-seat cassettes. Choose compact, well-formed and healthy plants.
