Terrestrial herbaceous plants of the genus Goodyer is very widespread. In the tropics, Goodyers are larger and more elegant, many of them live in deep shade under the canopy of rainforest, develop swamps and mossy rocks. Their fleshy shoots spread horizontally over the substrate, and several of the uppermost internodes bear a rosette of oval or elongated leaves, even green in color or with light patterned veins. In some Goodyer species, shoots live for no more than a year, while others are able to develop systems of 2-3 consecutive perennial shoots. The inflorescence is apical, 10-60 cm long, with nondescript white or greenish flowers.

Cultivation

You can grow large Goodyer in large pots, and it is better to keep small species in wide and small containers - bowls, boxes, pallets, 7-10 cm deep and with a sufficient number of drainage holes. As drainage, use any materials that do not absorb water, for example, broken shards, pieces of foam, but not expanded clay. The substrate should be loose and breathable, you can use a mixture of leafy earth, rotted leaves, peat, cut sphagnum, sand.

Location

Goodyer grow well on windowsills without special indoor greenhouses, in winter they do not need additional lighting, but they require shading from direct sunlight.

Temperature

Goodyer require moderately warm maintenance with a winter night temperature of 14-16 °C. Fluctuations in temperature stimulate flowering, which negatively affects the decorative effect of the plant.

Watering

Water the goodyers with settled or soft rainwater, the temperature of which is 3-4 °C higher than the ambient air. It is better to water from below, soaking the substrate through the lower drainage holes.

Transplant

Adult plants are transplanted into a new substrate every 1-2 years. When transplanting, the roots are carefully cleaned of the old substrate, washed in boiled water, and then carefully spread out in a new container and carefully pour fresh substrate on top.

Care

Removal of dying leaves and inflorescences.

Reproduction

The best time to breed is in spring and early summer. When adventitious roots are formed on the shoot, you need to cut off the top with leaves and two or three internodes, always with sleeping buds in the axils of the leaves, and put it in moss so that the leaves are on the surface.

Diseases

Goodyers are sometimes affected by root rot (fusariasis), which manifests itself as rounded or elongated purple spots on shoots and leaves. As chemical measures to control fusarium infection, it is recommended to spray and water 0.2% suspension of fundazole, benomil or topsin 3 times in a row with an interval of 10 days.

Acquisition

Goodyer is collectible plants, and you can only find them from amateur collectors who are specially engaged in their reproduction.
